Car insurance FAQ

How does car insurance work?

In Canada, you must have car insurance if you legally own and drive a vehicle. Car insurance helps protect you against financial loss in the event of an accident or theft of your vehicle. The coverage you need depends on where you live. Each province and territory sets their own mandatory coverage requirements. You can also buy additional coverages to enhance your level of protection from your insurance provider.

How much is car insurance?

Insurance companies consider a variety of things to make sure you’re getting the best price possible, including:

  • The coverage you need and the deductible(s) you choose
  • Your vehicle year, make and model
  • How you use your vehicle (i.e., pleasure, commuting or business)
  • How far you drive each year
  • Where you live
  • Your driving experience and the experience of any other drivers you’re also insuring

How can I save on my car insurance?

There are a few ways you could save on car insurance:

  • Build a consistent accident and conviction-free track record
  • Review your policy yearly to take advantage of available discounts
  • Increase your deductible
  • Combine your car and home insurance
  • Sign up for Aviva Journey and get rewarded for safe driving (only in Ontario)
  • Drive less and take public transit when possible

Will my car insurance cover me as an Uber or Lyft driver?

Ride-share driving is excluded from personal car insurance policies because it’s considered outside the normal coverage of “personal use”. In other words, your personal car insurance policy only covers day-to-day driving such as running errands, shopping, taking a trip, or commuting to and from work. It doesn’t provide coverage for transporting paying passengers.

If you’re a driver for a ride-sharing service like Uber or Lyft, or you’re considering becoming one, be sure to check with your insurance representative to make sure your car insurance includes the right ride-sharing add-on coverage for you and your passengers.

Does personal car insurance cover rental?

Most personal car insurance policies have optional coverages you can buy to help cover rentals for different situations:

  • General car rental: Any time you rent a car, you are taking responsibility for the vehicle and anything that happens to it. If you’re planning to rent a car within Canada or the United States, it’s a good idea to speak to your insurance representative to ensure you have the right insurance coverage. In most cases, you can buy additional coverage that can be added to your personal car insurance policy.
  • Car rental for a covered claim: Your personal car insurance policy may cover car rentals if you bought additional coverage for transportation replacement. This will help reduce out-of-pocket expenses toward a covered claim for alternative transportation while your car is being repaired.

To encourage greater adoption of zero-emission vehicles, Aviva offers an electric vehicle discount* that could help you save on car insurance. When you choose to insure an EV, you’re also ensuring a more sustainable future.

*The discount varies based on the province and territory the policy is written. Start date of availability varies between distribution channels.
