Home-Based Business coverage protects people who operate a business from their principal residence. It provides protection for business property, liability, and lost income after a covered claim.
As part of our commitment to our customers, we’re updating your Home-Based Business coverage to better align with the needs of Canadians who operate home businesses across the country.
What you need to do
When your policy renews, your Home-Based Business coverage will be updated.
If you currently have professional liability coverage, please contact your broker to discuss your coverage needs. If your policy does not currently include professional liability coverage, no action is required.
What you need to know
Here are the key updates that you’ll see on your Certificate of Insurance (COI) in your policy package:
| Product Update | What's changing |
| Business property | Business property includes, but is not limited to, business equipment (computers, printers, specialized tools), inventory (goods you make, purchase or sell), and furniture (desks, chairs, shelves). The coverage included with your policy for business property is increasing, with the option to further increase it by speaking to your broker. |
| Internet sales | Internet sales, also called e-commerce or online sales, is the process of selling goods or services on the internet. Transactions happen digitally through apps, online platforms, or websites. Internet sales within Canada are now covered under this policy. |
| Revenue | Revenue is the total amount of money earned from goods sold and delivered and services provided before any returns or discounts are applied. The revenue limit to be eligible for coverage is increasing. |
| Home-based business employees | We have increased the allowed number of employees who do not live in your home to be eligible for coverage. Coverage is increasing for employees who do not live in your home. Coverage for employees living in your home will remain unchanged. |
| Professional/home business liability | Home business liability coverage continues to be offered under your policy. Professional liability coverage is no longer offered with this policy. If you currently have professional liability coverage, please contact your broker to discuss your coverage needs. |
