British Columbia | Episode 1

Video transcript

- [Jim] The "Fun Side of Life" gets me on the back of a Harley in beautiful British, Columbia, behind the scenes at a custom motorcycle shop.

- This is where all the magic happens. You wanted to see behind the curtain.

- And on the water to check out Lake Okanagan's famous boating culture. Join me on my cross Canada RV tour as I look for the fun side of life. Today, I'm heading over to Konquer Motorcycles, a legendary custom motorcycle shop. My friend, Tim, is giving me my first motorcycle ride in 20 years. I'm a bit nervous

- Jim, we're gonna go for a ride today.

- I can't wait. I've never been on a Harley before.

- Really?

- Yeah.

- Well, this is a classic. It's a 1992 FXT or they called it a Sport Glide.

- How do I keep my balance?

- Just sit up straight and just follow me. That's the best way.

- Don't slouch go with it.

- Yeah. If I lean into a corner, just stay with me.

- Okay. I'm excited. I don't know, I can't contain myself. I don't move until you tell me to move.

- [Tim] Let me get it started first.

- [Jim] Sure.

- See what I mean? Very novice.

- [Tim] That's okay. You'll be just fine. I'll move forward a bit. You on?

- I'm on.

- Perfect.

- There we go.

- [Tim] All right. Way to go, buddy.

- Don't go here.

- You first. There you go.

- That was awesome. I've never felt safer in my life.

- There you go.

- Thank you so much.

- You're welcome, you're welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed.

- That was awesome. Did you feel the smile on my face the entire time?

- I did, I did. There was this big beam in the back of my head.

- I think I have a permanent smile now. I can understand the liberating feeling that you get. when you're on it.

- That's just a small example of what we do when we ride here in the Okanagan. There's so many places to go. The scenery's fabulous.

- [Jim] I headed inside with Tim and we were surrounded by an incredible variety of custom motorcycles made by the team. It's no wonder Custom Creations is a Mecca for motorcycle enthusiasts all over North America. What is it that you offer here?

- People, whether they buy a newer bike or they get a second hand one, they wanna make it their own. Right? What we do is we give them that opportunity. A lot of people come here from across Canada. There's no other place like us.

- [Jim] What are we looking at here? What are we looking at here? I don't recognize these bikes, but they look epic.

- These two bikes over here, they fall into the performance bagger category and basically they've got a lot of performance parts. We did a military bike, which was a tribute.

- I love the finished products, but I'd love to see how they're done.

- Ah, well, that's top secret. Sorry, you can't go there.

- Okay.

- No, I'm teasing.

- [Jim] Time to peek behind the curtain and see where custom motorcycles are born.

- All right, Jim, this is where all the magic happens. You wanted to see behind the curtain.

- Love it.

- This is where it's gonna be.

- This is your secret lair of awesome creation, right?

- Well, there's a lot that's gone on here and there's a lot more to go on as well. Our guys work really hard. Everything from basic services, oil change, right up to full customization. We tear the bike down. We do everything to it. And it all depends on what the customer wants, of course. We also have our own paint and body operations so we can do everything. Custom paint and graphics and all that kind of stuff.

- Tim, you obviously love what you do. This can't be work for you, right?

- It absolutely is not. No. I found my dream job. I've ridden bikes since I was very young. I've always been around bikes. I've gone through various careers in my lifetime and now I'm here and this is something I've always wanted to be a part of. I'm glad to work with the great crew that we have and they're all invested. They all are part of this culture. This is what we do.

- [Jim] I couldn't let the opportunity pass to spend a bit more time on Tim's motorcycle. He was gracious enough to drive me to my next adventure. The Okanagan Valley's crown jewel is Okanagan Lake. The Kelowna Yacht Club is the perfect place for me to find the fun side of life on the lake. Thom Killingsworth is the executive director at the Kelowna Yacht Club and he's also just a regular guy who's happiest on the water.

- So there's about a thousand boats in the marina here.

- Wow.

- One common theme is this is really a community where people kinda treat this as their campground. Some people just sit on their boats and party. Yeah and some people have boats like this one where you can really enjoy the lake for weeks on end without having to leave the boat.

- Can we take a look?

- Yeah, yeah, awesome.

- Oh yeah.

- It's a home on water. Absolutely.

- Oh yeah. Wow. Wow, look at this. This doesn't feel cramped at all. This is like super spacious.

- [Thom] Tons of room, barbecue and a fridge and freezer here and microwave and TV. It comes down from the ceiling

- Panoramic.

- Absolutely.

- Right.

- Yeah. Oh, wow. Yeah.

- It just opens it right up.

- I was impressed because below deck, there were two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Any family could call this boat home.

- Kelowna's a very busy town in the summer. It's a tourist town. It's a great spot for lots of people to come to, but once you get out on the lake, you're really in a different world.

- [Jim] During my chat with Tom, he suggested we check out something totally different, a boat that he feels goes so well with the Lake Okanagan lifestyle.

- So this boat's completely different than the last boat we looked at. These are a really great way to enjoy the lake and they're so stable. It's actually the only way I could get my mum and dad out on the water because you can pull it right close. You can step on really easily. This boat has three pontoons. If you get caught in a storm or there's some waves, it just cuts right through. It's a living room on the water.

- [Jim] I could see why this boat would appeal to all ages. Stepping on board was just as easy as stepping through a doorway.

- [Thom] You can get to where you wanna get to as fast as you want or you can just get into the middle of the lake, shut it off, and just enjoy the day.

- I feel like this is the kind of boat where people can just come together and just chat.

- Some of our best days on the lake, even this summer, have been when my wife and my two kids come out and her sister and their kids, there's conversations happening out front, there's barbecuing happening out back, there's kids jumping in the water.

- This boat is a memory maker then.

- A lot of our best times are out on on the lake and in a boat like this.

- Even though it was a calm and really crisp evening, Tom insisted we head out onto the water in this gorgeous sailboat. He felt the only way I'd really understand the appeal of Lake Okanagan was to be smack dab in the middle. He even showed me how to raise a sail. You know, he was right. Once we were there, I definitely started to get it. This is beautiful. It is so serene.

- I've lived here for quite some time, but I'm always amazed when I get out on the lake, even just a half a kilometer from the city, you're in your own space. You feel like you're in the middle of nowhere and it's so quiet. You're so right. It's just a very peaceful.

- Describe for me the lake lifestyle.

- It's family, it's the sunsets, the beautiful nights, and the warm lake.

- Is it always hard to be go back and dock the boat when you've been out here?

- Actually one of the most challenging things is docking the boat. I like a challenge. It's always great when you can get out here for a few hours. It just reminds you how lucky we are to live where we live and to have this kind of experience.

- What a day. Tim showed me the freedom and beauty of the open road from the back of a classic motorcycle. What a rush. At the Kelowna Yacht Club, I learned that you could have a nice day on the lake or make it your home. It's truly up to you. Today might be over, but you never know what tomorrow's gonna bring. Why don't you come along with me? See where I go next.

Video transcript

- The Fun Side of Life brings me to the Okanagan Valley, where I'm sport fishing... Yeah, jumping back there! This might be happening! Checking out cool RVs. Well, you can easily transform this into a dance floor. This is how big it becomes. And sipping some tasty Pinot noir. Join me for the Fun Side of Life. How are you?

- Excellent.

- I'm no fisherman, and I haven't cast a line since the 1980s. Luckily, my friend Rod, from Rodney's REEL Outdoors, is gonna change all that. He's got a state-of-the-art setup on his 22-foot thunder jet Chinook hard-top boat. I mean, if anyone can get a fish into my hands again, it's Rod.

- So we're targeting the rainbow trout. The rainbow trout are gonna be cruising around the lake. Sometimes just going right down the middle of the lake is is our best chance. We're gonna be using down riggers. And we hook the line into, what we call, a down rigger release clip, so that... And then we can drop it to whatever depth we wanna fish. There's a digital readout on here. It's a really cool way of targeting the fish. So on the sonar, if we're seeing fish at, say, 40 feet, then we just lift them or drop them to whatever depth they're at, and it allows us to catch our fish.

- So has fishing become more of a science?

- I would say so. Yeah, yeah, especially if you wanna be more successful, right?

- This isn't your grandpa's fishing.

- No. You ready to throw that one in?

- Sure. I really hope I do catch a fish. Really do. It'll be 35 years since I've caught a fish --

- [Rod] Oh wow. Looks good. So if you see one of the rods, you know, start bouncing, you know, like that, fish on.

- Well, how do you reel it in?

- Just work at it, man. Usually, that's not a problem.

- Okay, good thing I've been doing some tricep workouts.

- [Rod] There you go.

- Yeah, right. So Rodney, your job is what a lot of people do just for fun.

- Yeah.

- [Jim] Right.

- I'm blessed. It's so exciting to watch people get a fish on the line, especially if it's their first fish.

- How would you describe fishing culture in the Okanagan?

- I did it with my grandfather when I was six years old. So I guess it would be, you know, part of that. It's just in your blood, something I've been doing for a long time, and we get a lot of people like that. We actually get a lot of people that move here for the fishing.

- What makes fishing in the Okanagan so special?

- Just look around, right? You know, we're on Okanagan Lake. The lake's 80 miles long. And we've got, you know, the wineries and the vineyards all over the hillsides. And sometimes we see bears on the shore or California big horn sheep. We see those quite often. So yeah, it's... Oh, we got a fish on, guys. We got a fish right there. See it bouncing?

- [Jim] Yep.

- [Rod] See it bouncing? Grab it outta the clip. Grab it out here.

- Okay.

- Put your thumb on the spool. Okay, nice and slow. Nice and slow. Just slow down. Let's see if he's still on there. Oh, he's jumping back there.

- This might be happening! Nice rainbow trout.

- Wow. Fish on; we got 'em. We got him.

- [Jim] Wow!

- Well done, man.

- That's a thrill, oh man! That's amazing! First fish caught since 1987!

- [Rod] Why'd you wait so long?

- Wow, what a thrill!

- [Rod] Good job!

- Oh, I can't believe it. This is an amazing feeling.

- It is.

- An amazing feeling. And now I'm gonna let him go.

- Awesome, even better feeling when you let him go.

- Yeah, definitely.

- So just, yeah, over the side head first. Nice and easy and...

- [Jim] Just, like, jump.

- [Rod] Well, there he goes.

- Amazing feeling.

- You just slimed me! We're all slimed now!

- Now we're slime brothers. Fishing with Rodney made me feel like a kid again, and I think it's important to say that we caught way bigger fish once we turned off the cameras. You'll just have to trust me on that one. Now, I'm off to see my friend Doug in Kelowna. He knows more about RVs than any other person I know. I drive a class C, but he told me there's so much more to RVing than what I've been driving across Canada. So Doug, I am fascinated with the RV culture, but I wanna know about the variety of experiences to have in an RV.

- Well, in the RV world, there is so many different aspects to it, from the very large units down to smaller ones. There's really something for everyone.

- This Mini Max is not something I'd have expected to see on Doug's lot. It's a small package, but it's got huge potential for fun. Oh yeah. Yeah, I'm gonna have a seat.

- Go ahead.

- All right.

- Go ahead; get comfortable.

- That's awesome; you know what? This is a, a prime example of "never judge a book by its cover," right? It may look small from the outside, but inside it's packed.

- It's got all the features of a full-size travel trailer: a bathroom with a shower and toilet, big fridge --

- Right. You got a full kitchenette, everything. So Doug, who's typically in one of these?

- People 30 to 40 years old that are into mountain biking or they're into hiking. There's unlimited places that they can go with with a unit like this.

- Grab and go, no fuss, and the versatility of being at home.

- Exactly.

- It's a feeling of being at home.

- It is.

- Doug's follow up is bigger than pretty much every apartment I've ever lived in. This is a home on wheels. Wow! This is unbelievable.

- I didn't think it was this big.

- Well, do you know what? I can show you just how big it can get. So once you get to your campsite or your destination, takes a few minutes, everything opens up. You're set to go.

- You can easily transform this into a dance floor. This is how big it becomes.

- Yeah, you don't feel like you're crowded at all.

- It's really starting to look like a home.

- Well, you know, let's see... That's the whole idea of these coaches. So there's every luxury, really, that anyone could want in an apartment or a home. There's your dishwasher, a stove, convection ovens, big double door fridges, a separate bedroom back there, washer and dryer, bathroom.

- Doug, I never... I mean, this blew me away. I never thought that you could live this comfortably in a home that moves. Have you had people come back to you and tell you that you've changed their life because of the RV experience that they're getting?

- As a matter of fact, I have. A lot of people claim, "Now we're able to see our family a lot more, where we couldn't see them before. Now we can take them on trips." The grandkids spend time with them. Yeah, it changes their lives.

- Doug, in a nutshell, describe the RV experience.

- A feeling of freedom. You have the ability to be anywhere. And when you have all the amenities that you have in here, you don't feel like you're away from home. You have a home here.

- [Jim] You can't spend time in the Okanagan Valley without tasting some of the world class wines produced in this region, so I'm heading to the 50th Parallel Estate Winery to visit my friend, Travis. After a quick behind the scenes tour, he set us up for the most scenic wine tasting I've ever been to.

- Welcome to 50th Parallel.

- Thank you for having me.

- [Travis] We're on the 50th Parallel at the moment. Our name is where we're located.

- It's breathtaking. And Pinot noir is what you're famous for.

- It is. Pinot noir is a grape which can be quite fickle to grow and vinify. Pinot is one of the few red varieties which really prefers a more Northern environment because it's really thin-skinned. In hot climates, much like myself, it's just gonna get sunburnt and stop going. Up here, it's gonna reach maturity. We're gonna begin with our 2018 Blanc de Noir.

- [Jim] As a novice wine drinker, what am I expecting to taste here?

- [Travis] So on this wine, you're going to find lots of hard fruits, apples, pears, and a small amount of breaded aromas. Think brioche.

- Ooh. I can't describe it as elegantly as you, but that is a very crisp wine.

- Very vibrant acidity. Lots of Granny Smith.

- Oh, that's delicious.

- [Travis] Next is our 2020 Pinot noir rosé.

- [Jim] Okay.

- [Travis] Incredibly trendy right now.

- Oh, that's a little lighter. That's a "sit down on a back deck and enjoy the day" kind of wine to me.

- It's a patio pounder for sure.

- Oh, patio pounder. Travis, third one's the charm.

- Our flagship wine: 2019 Pinot noir the great 50th Parallel has built its brand on.

- So Travis, why are we having this one last?

- Well, you always begin with your light whites and sparklings; move into something with a little bit of structure, or oak; and then end with your reds, so the wines don't step on one another. This was aged in French oak for 16 months. Showing lots of cocoa, vanilla, pepper, red fruits. Full and firm for Pinot noir.

- Oh yeah. This is a little bit more of a heavier kind of wine. I feel like I should have this with a steak.

- Yes, you see what I mean by structure? It's a lot more rigid. It's a bit more tactile on the palette. You can actually feel it. That's something we really thrive to do here at 50th Parallel.

- Mission accomplished, right?

- Thank you.

- I couldn't have wished for a more beautiful day. My friend Doug gave me an inside look at RV culture. I caught my first fish in more than 30 years on Okanagan Lake. I felt like a kid again. And I capped it all off with a wine tasting right at the 50th parallel. I could stay here forever, but I gotta hit the road and find my a next adventure.

Video transcript

- The Fun Side of Life brings me to Halifax Harbour and an unforgettable tour of the city from the water. Then I'm sitting down for a meal to remember from one of Sydney's great chefs. All day I could eat this. Join me on my cross-Canada RV tour as I discover the Fun Side of Life. I spent the morning roaming the east coast of Cape Breton; taking in the sights and sounds of Atlantic Canada, but I wasn't roaming aimlessly. I was slowly heading towards Halifax, Downtown Halifax to be exact. I had an appointment to cruise the harbor with Sea Halifax Tours. My captain for the day was Bader Bassett. And before we hit the water, he was sure to to go through all the safety protocols to make sure our trip was as safe as it was fun. I'm so glad I have hair to enjoy this. What experience do you hope people take away with them after they ride with you?

- A lot of people don't ever see it from the water, don't ever see the city from the water, and they're like, "Oh my god, we didn't know Halifax was this beautiful." And a lot of people don't ever get the experience to see the islands, like for example, Georges Island right here.

- [Jim] Are you from Halifax?

- So I'm originally Egyptian. I moved here about nine years ago to go to school here, and it's a beautiful city here, honestly. There's always something happening here, and it's a growing city so it's like every year you're here, you see something new being built. It's not the same city that I moved to nine years ago.

- Is this a top-five experience anyone should have in Halifax?

- Oh, a 100%, a 100%.

- 200%!

- 200%, honestly. Yeah, so if you look in there, there's a submarine right there.

- [Jim] Right there, man. Bader, is this heaven?

- Honestly, it's the best job I could have.

- That's awesome.

- I'd rather be doing this than anything else.

- Of course, yeah. I don't blame you. This isn't a slow boat.

- [Bader] This boat is a jet boat, so it drives a little bit different. It does go a lot faster than most other boats.

- There's nothing wrong with catamarans, but this is a rocket ship.

- Oh, yeah, a 100%. This is way more fun. This is where it's at.

- Bader, this was great. Thank you so much for the tour. I'm looking forward to getting back into this rocket mode.

- We'll let you drive this time.

- Oh! Are you sure?

- Yeah.

- All right.

- [Bader] You wanna drive?

- What's that?

- [Bader] You wanna drive?

- I don't mind.

- [Bader] Let's do it.

- Yeah? All right. All right.

- Perfect. So if you want, like, try going a little bit to the right.

- Yeah.

- You can give it more, that's fine.

- Yeah. Yeah! Whoo!

- Yeah, it's fun isn't it?

- Oh, man. I'm moving here! Every single muscle in my body is tight right now. My tour of Halifax Harbour with Bader will stick with me forever. But after that adventure, I had a long drive ahead of me so I had to head out. I was going to Sydney for a special meal from a renowned chef. On the bay in North Sydney, there's a restaurant hidden where you wouldn't expect. Between the ferry terminal and some warehouses is the the Lobster Pound and Moore. It's got a great reputation for East Coast cuisine, and chef Richie Moore sat down with me to snack on an appetizer and chat.

- Why I became a chef is because I always wanted to; I could always cook. I kind of had high metabolism. Yeah, I plan on dying at the stove, and I will cater my own funeral so that's my attitude towards cooking.

- What kind of experience can people expect to have here? And what kind of experience do you want them to take with them?

- Oh, take away a little box of food, 'cause I give large portions. So hopefully everyone gets full, but we're more of an intimate adult date place. We're where you go for your anniversary or birthday. Our food is a little bit higher end. Our motto here is food made with love for those who love food.

- Finish this sentence for me, okay? Your perfect meal is?

- To me, the ideal meal for me is to give someone an experience they've never had before that makes the guest happy and puts a smile on their face when they're walking out the door.

- [Jim] Chef Richie wanted to make sure I had the same experience as all his customers, so he prepared me one of his signature meals and proceeded to blow my mind.

- [Richie] So Jim.

- [Jim] Holy. Whoa.

- [Richie] Here we have local halibut cheek, okay? Very rare; you don't usually see these end up in the grocery store. A tomato-cucumber salad. Tomatoes are grown in my greenhouse.

- Oh, wow.

- Local julienne vegetable medley. Pan seared. Little bit of butter, salt and pepper. Basmati rice, fluffy, with a little bit of turmeric for color, and on the side, a little chili-pineapple butter sauce.

- Beautiful.

- Enjoy.

- I can't wait to dig in. This looks amazing.

- So good! All day I could eat this. The food, the people, the endless scenery, Nova Scotia is genuinely one of my favorite places in the world. Yesterday had it all: food, scenery and a cool ride. But I never stay in one place for too long. I'm getting back on the road. See you again soon.
