Whether you call it a cottage, cabin, or camp, your nature getaway brings you comfort, joy, and relaxation. The care you give it throughout the season is sure to return to you in the seasons to come.

Spring opening – a kick the season off right checklist

Before you put on the flip flops, you might need to wear your work boats to address any issues that may have arisen over winter and to prepare your getaway for the rigors of a great season ahead.

Exterior checks

  • Inspect your roof, shingles, flashing for winter damage
  • Look at and clear eavestroughs and downspouts
  • Check your decks, stairs and railings for rot or looseness
  • Examine for any signs of wildlife intrusion

Systems and utilities

  • Gradually turn on water and check for leaks
  • Inspect pipes for cracks or burst damage
  • Test electricity, breakers and outlets
  • Service HVAC or wood stove before using

Safety checks

  • Test smoke and CO alarms
  • Replace batteries
  • Check fire extinguishers (expiry + pressure)
  • Review emergency exits and escape plan

Summer maintenance – regular upkeep to keep the good times going

The sunny season is the peak of cottage enjoyment. With a little upkeep, you can help make the most of those great days.

Property care

  • Trim trees and branches near structures
  • Reduce fire risk by clearing dead vegetation and other flammable material away from structures
  • Keep grass and vegetation under control

Water & weather protection

  • Regularly monitor for leaks, moisture or mould
  • Inspect windows, doors and seals after storms

Dock + waterfront (if applicable)

  • Periodically inspect dock stability and fastenings
  • Check ladders, boards and flotation
  • Store fuel safely for boats and equipment

Fall closing – appreciating summer’s sunset

As the long days of summer give way to the long shadows of autumn’s changing colours, you’ll want to give a responsible sendoff to the cottage or cabin. Be more confident in the season ahead.

Water shutdown (key loss prevention section)

  • Turn off water supply
  • Drain your pipes, faucets and water heater
  • Add antifreeze where needed

Exterior preparation

  • Clean gutters and remove debris
  • Secure outdoor furniture and BBQs
  • Inspect roof before the snow falls

Indoor preparation

  • Remove perishables and garbage
  • Set thermostat (if heated) or fully winterize
  • Unplug non-essential electronics

Secure your space

  • Lock doors and windows
  • Install timers or smart monitoring (if available)

Winter monitoring – bundle up for the cold season

Canadian winters can pack a punch. Since you might not be spending much time at your getaway over the colder months, you’ll want to keep an eye on your cottage or cabin while winter takes its swings.

  • Notify a neighbour or arrange for nearby friends to check in regularly
  • Use smart devices (temperature, leak sensors, cameras) to watch for:
    • Ice dams
    • Snow load on roof
    • Signs of break-ins
    • Animal intrusions

A cottage for all seasons

Show your cottage or cabin some love and it’ll show it right back to you in the many seasons to come. Keep your seasonal checklist handy to ensure that you make the most of your natural haven. Enjoy!
